Porta Nigra

The best-preserved Roman city gate north of the Alps — Trier's landmark and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Around 170 AD, the Romans built this mighty city gate from grey sandstone blocks — entirely without mortar, connected only by iron clamps. The Porta Nigra owes its survival as the only one of Trier's four city gates to make it through the centuries to a detour through the church: in the Middle Ages it was converted into a double church, only Napoleon had the Roman structure restored.

Today the "Black Gate" is the iconic starting point for every visit to Trier: those who climb the spiral stairs enjoy views across the rooftops, cathedral and Moselle valley. The pedestrian zone begins right behind it — perfect for starting your city stroll.
